The strain of avian influenza found on an egg farm at Meredith, south-east of Ballarat, has been revealed.
Authorities say the highly pathogenic H7N3 strain has been traced, which is different to the strain causing problems in other parts of the world.
Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer Graeme Cooke says consumers should not be concerned about eggs bought from supermarkets saying they don’t pose a risk and are safe to consume.
Movement controls are now in place to prevent the spread of the virus while the property is quarantined.
All poultry are being disposed of, with contact tracing underway to determine the source and spread of the infection.
