Travellers making the trip though Cardigan in Ballarat’s west will soon get a safer go of it with a roundabout set to be installed at a major intersection now a step closer.
The $3 million state government contract to upgrade the four-way Remembrance Drive/Madden Road/Weighbridge Road intersection has this week been awarded to Wendouree’s Enoch Civil.
The intersection has seen 10 serious accidents since 2013 including a fatality in 2018.
A roundabout was determined to be the best long term safety upgrade at the site following a range of other upgrades that have taken place in recent years, including speed restrictions, dedicated turning lanes and improved signage.
The decision on a roundabout was developed by a working group made up of Victoria Police, City of Ballarat and the Avenue of Honour/Arch of Victory Committee.
Michael Bailey from the Department of Transport says he’s confident they’ve now got the planning right.
“We’ve worked really hard from a road safety point of view to find the right solution for that intersection.
“We were out there while we were doing the announcement and there’s a lot of trucks move through there, a lot of vehicles that move through there that we need to accommodate, so a long term solution was one of the most important factors.” Bailey said.
Construction will begin in April and has been given a six month time frame.
