Poppy project brings the ANZAC story to Lucas youngsters

The people of Lucas have rallied to bring community inclusion and education around ANZAC Day to the fore.

This year’s Poppy Project saw around 3000 of the wooden flowers ‘planted’ at Coltman Plaza, that’s about three times more than a year ago.

The poppies are made from biproduct’s from a timber mill, minimising the impact on the environment.

Lucas local and organiser Rebecca Love says it has grown this year thanks to enthusiastic schools and students and through the financial support of Ballarat Connected Communities.

“We’ve been able to grow it my reaching more kids and more schools.”

“We put an expression of interest out to lots of local schools to see who would like to be involved and they jumped at the opportunity,” Ms. Love said.

The schools include Siena Catholic Primary School, Lucas Primary School and Alfredton Primary School.

Over 1,200 Students have been able to reflect on their learnings about Australia’s history and the sacrifices made by the ANZAC’s.
