Despite this week’s federal budget predicting a $4.2 billion surplus, there’s still no money on the table from Canberra for the regional Victorian Commonwealth Games in 2026.
Ballarat MP and the Minister for Regional Development Catherine King says any money will need to leave a legacy.
“There is a small provision for the Commonwealth Games that is not announced as yet, as to what that is we are still working our way through with the state government.”
“I’ve said all the way along that my interest in the Commonwealth investment in the Comm Games is really in how it helps contribute to increasing social and affordable housing,” Minister King said.
It comes as the state opposition calls for Commonwealth Games Minister Jacinta Allan to inform local councils, like Ballarat, what their financial contribution will be.
