Some solace for users of the Ballarat airport today with council confirming the current entry road, Airport Road, will re-open later in the year.

A detour will be in place via Sunraysia Drive, McCartney’s Road, Highfield Road and Hopetoun Road as work gets underway to lengthen the runway by 555 metres.

Once the job is complete, Airport Road will be used again with motorists literally driving over the new part of the runway which will be built across it.

“The City of Ballarat will re-open Airport Road to traffic on 10th June 2023, or as soon as construction of this section of the runway is completed,” said Natalie Robertson, City of Ballarat Director of Development and Growth.

“Aircraft landing and taking off is not impacted during construction.”

“The extended airport runway in its entirety will be able to be used once Liberator Drive is constructed, she said.

“The Airport runway is able to continue to operate in its current capacity until this time.”

There’s no word yet on when the new permanent entry via Liberator Drive will be constructed.
