Ballarat council says its current parking scheme in the CBD is so successful it might consider extending restrictions until 7pm.

Currently paid Zone 1 on street parking is free for the first hour, then charged per hour after that, between the hours of 9am and 5.30pm.

The city says the high turnover of cars, particularly in the ‘foodie’ area of Armstrong Street, indicates people are popping in and out of hospitality and retail businesses which is good for trade.

However, Cr Ben Taylor says its not a done deal.

“It’s not going to happen overnight, it might not happen at all, but we want to get the feedback to see if this an alternative, or are there other options to look at?”

Cr. Taylor says the feedback will come from what they’re seeing on a local level.

“This time round we’re doing the consultation again on what’s happening now, what’s worked, what hasn’t worked and then we’ll look at those options from the feedback we’ve got (to decide) is this an option to extend the parking paid through to 7 o’clock?”
