Ballarat’s Mayor has issued a statement calling for respect in the wake of the alleged attack on MP Helen Haines in Wangaratta.
Cr Tracey Hargreaves saying that everyone who works in public office deserves to be safe while undertaking their duties.
“That accessibility is one of local government’s greatest strengths and an essential part of a healthy democracy.”

“We cannot afford to lose it.”
“If people feel unsafe serving in public office, or if public officials withdraw from community engagement out of concern for their safety, our communities are poorer for it,” Mayor Hargreaves said.
The City has extended its support to Mrs. Haines and reaffirmed the importance of respectful civic engagement.
