In a first for Ballarat, a service will be held this weekend to remember World War 1 soldiers that were killed by accidents rather than in battle.
20 men’s names will be called out at the short service with some of their stories told.
Some of the tragic accidents include being run over by a horse drawn wagon, dying after falling from a horse and being hit by lightening.
Arch of Victory / Avenue of Honour Committee President Garry Snowden says its important this group of men is remembered.
“We tend to remember the men who were lost in battles, but often its forgotten that there were other men who lost their lives while serving the country.”
“These men were just the same, they volunteered, they left their homes, families and loved ones to go and serve their country,” Mr. Snowden said.
The community service will take place this Sunday from 10.30am at The Arch of Victory.
