A Ballarat parking meter has been ripped from the ground and found dumped near a Western Freeway overpass, north of the city.

Council says it’s the second time this has occurred in the last 4 years, with each meter costing $8,000 to replace.

They’ve reportedly been claimed on insurance and replaced.

It’s unclear if the theft was for the coins inside or valuable copper.

In a statement, City of Ballarat’s Director of Growth and Development, Natalie Robertson, said if drivers need to park near a meter that is either missing or not working, they can use the Cellopark app to pay for their parking.

She said if drivers don’t have the app, they can contact the City of Ballarat customer service line on 5320 5500, or walk to the nearest meter.
