Ballarat is set to get a dedicated Crime Reduction Team by January next year, the same as those announced for Melbourne and Geelong earlier this month.

Officers will case manage people with an extensive history of committing crimes such as burglaries, assaults and car thefts.

Acting Superintendent Jason Templar of Ballarat Police says their aim will be to get repeat offenders before a magistrate.

“It’ll be no surprise that we are all focused on reducing crime.”

“The methodology around Crime Reduction Teams is identifying that small percentage of offenders that commit the majority of our crimes.”

“So, your recidivist offenders, holding them to account and getting them before the courts,” Acting Superintendent Templar said.

Crime Reduction Teams will complement existing major police operations, such as Operation Alliance and Operation Trinity, as well as Crime Command’s ongoing enforcement against organised crime figures.
