Local running legend Steve Moneghetti says he’s overwhelmed after the success of the inaugural Ballarat Marathon.

Around 4,700 people took part in road running events over Saturday and Sunday, with the marathon helping to raise over $113,000 for 200 charities.

Mr. Moneghetti, the marathon’s race director, says he’s looking forward to building on the event.

“I think it all went well [and] we’ll learn from a few things,” he said.

“It’s always difficult, the first one. You never know how it’s going to go, but it’s been so well received [and] we’re looking forward to building on what was a terrific initial event, so onwards and upwards.”

The CEO of Ballarat Council, Evan King, says the marathon ‘ticked all the boxes’.

He says so many people showed that Ballarat should have a marathon.

“The original base case was sort of done on about 2 and a half thousand participants [and] they ended up within excess of 4,700, so in any measure that’s a huge success.”
