A transport advocate has supported a recommendation by the state’s chamber of commerce for a local high speed train service.

The chamber has released its state budget submission for the next financial year, with a target of catalyzing economic growth and sustainability in regional Victoria.

Among the recommendations, the chamber is calling for funds to be allocated for a business case to build a regional high-speed train service, via dedicated lines from Southern Cross Station, starting with Ballarat.

They suggest a partnership starts with the Federal Government to establish joint funding for the project.

Nick Beale says whilst he doesn’t believe Ballarat’s population justifies a bullet train, a dedicated line gives people the ability to go there in future.

“I think if everybody could just say that they could get into Melbourne on any service under an hour, that would be just fantastic, and that’s what I would be aiming for,” he said.
