The City of Ballarat says it is being proactive when it comes to protecting Lake Wendouree’s famous black swans.
Council Chief Executive Officer Evan King says a permanent fence along Gillies Street will form part of the Botanical Gardens Draft Masterplan that will go to councillors for consideration next month.
Mr. King also says trials of different length grasses for the swans to feed on away from busy roads have not been overly successful.
“We’ve tried different mowing heights; we’ve tried different types of grasses, we continue to look at different ways to try and protect the swans.”
“It’s a great challenge isn’t it, when wildlife starts to interact with residential growth and traffic, it is really difficult,” Mr. King said.
His comments come following a suggestion from Melissa Morey of the Ballarat Wildlife Rehabilitation & Conservation group that council are not doing enough to protect local birdlife.
