The President of the Ballarat RSL has criticized the withdrawal of funding from a century-old service.
Provided by the Salvation Army, the ‘Sallyman’ program has offered defence personnel vital frontline emotional and spiritual support for years.
However, Frank Nuccio says the $1.5 million needed to fund the service has been taken off the table with defence cuts.
“In the wake of the Royal Commission, even if that friendly voice only helps one or two people, it’s still a friendly voice,” he said.
“I think especially considering the low amount of money it’s costing the defence force and the government, it just seems like [the cuts are] a strange thing to do.”
