The fence design of the controversial new zone substation in Ballarat East has been unveiled, with construction set to begin on Monday.

Dubbed ‘one of a kind’ by site owner Powercor, the green and neutral colored fence will feature images of the gold rush era, including the Eureka Stockade flag.

“This substation will look like no other across the region.” said Powercor spokesperson Emma Tyner.

“This fence once its built will combine really modern elements with some of Ballarat’s iconic images,” she said.

The exterior design of the site at 203 York Street was developed in partnership with residents who were invited to provide feedback and vote on a range of concepts and options.

Powercor says, once complete, the zone substation will provide power reliability and safety benefits to 82,000 homes and businesses.

The City of Ballarat had pushed back at the positioning of the substation in a residential area, however Powercor has pushed on with the plan saying it’s the best position for it having owned the site for over 50 years.

It’s expected to be operating by early 2026.
