Number of new refugees calling Ballarat home declining

The number of new refugees calling Ballarat home is starting to decline, according to the Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council.

The news comes as numerous Refugee Week activities continue across Ballarat, with the highlight being a community celebration at the Victoria Bowling Club in Ballarat East tomorrow.

CEO of the council, Suzanne Ryan-Evers, says higher numbers of refugees are now being homed to the west of the city.

“It is different each year. I think we had most of our refugee communities come through in the early 2000’s and there’s been that trickle ever since,” she said.

“Now we’re seeing possibly a little bit more concentration into the Grampians region.”
