If you’ve spent the last six months with the anthem “Golden” on a permanent loop, I have some news that might just make you scream louder than a front-row fan at a HUNTR/X concert. Netflix has officially greenlit a sequel to the animated phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters, and frankly, it is about time.

For those who haven’t yet tumbled down this particular rabbit hole, the original film (which debuted in June 2025) is far more than just a “musical girl” trope with better hair. It follows the superstars of HUNTR/X (Rumi, Mira, and Zoey) who balance selling out global stadiums with their “side hustle” as secret demon hunters. Their mission? Protecting their fans and maintaining the Honmoon, a magical barrier keeping the literal forces of darkness at bay.

The first film didn’t just give us bangers; it gave us the Saja Boys, a rival boy band who were actually demons in disguise. It was a clever, cheeky commentary on the “manufactured” nature of the industry, wrapped in high-octane animation and supernatural stakes. With over 500 million views and two Oscar nominations (Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song) heading into this weekend’s ceremony, a sequel wasn’t just hoped for; it was inevitable.

The Dream Team Returns

The best part of this announcement isn’t just the “2” at the end of the title. Netflix has confirmed that directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are returning to helm the follow-up. This isn’t just a one-off gig, either; it is the first project in a massive multiyear writing and directing partnership between the duo and the streamer.

What’s Next for HUNTR/X?

While we don’t have a release date yet, the potential is endless. The first film beautifully blended K-pop fandom culture with traditional Korean folklore. Now that the Honmoon has been reinforced and Rumi has embraced her true self, what does the next “comeback” look like for our favourite hunters?

Will we see a new supernatural sub-genre? Perhaps a demonic world tour? Whatever the plot, if the soundtrack is even half as catchy as the first, my iHeart playlist is in serious trouble of being played to death.

For now, we’ll be watching the Oscars this weekend with our lightsticks held high. Whether they take home the statue or not, the HUNTR/X era is clearly just getting started.
