The City of Ballarat has begun its Rabbit Control Program this week.

Baiting Stations will be placed at nine locations across the municipality including Bald Hills, Buninyong, Cardigan, Learmonth, Mt Pleasant and Sebastopol.

It comes as the Invasive Species Council has this week expressed concerns that if a new virus is not found soon to keep rabbit numbers down, they could once more build to plague proportions.

Signs will be placed at entry points to the baiting stations which are designed to protect other animals. Baits will be placed under the mesh canopies.

“While the risk of poisoning pets and wildlife is low, all care should be taken,” a council spokesperson said via its website.

Pet owners are urged to keep their animals restrained on a lead near the baiting stations at all times.
