Ballarat has lost former mayor John Phillips, who has died following a decade‑long battle with cancer.
Mr Phillips served as Mayor of Ballarat in 2014 and 2015, after being elected to the role during a period of transition within the council.
His death was confirmed on Friday.

Mr Phillips assumed the top job in September 2014 after a succession of leadership changes, at a time when council stability and internal cohesion were key community concerns.
He is survived by his wife Michelle, who said on social media he had “left giant footprints on the family’s hearts that will remain forever”.
His funeral will be held next Tuesday.
