She Thought Her Dream Was Over

The following day, Mel C says she was called into a meeting with the group’s manager, Simon Fuller, who warned her that another outburst could see her kicked out of the band.

She admitted she was devastated, believing she’d thrown away the opportunity she’d dreamed about for years before the Spice Girls had even released their first single.

Looking back, Mel C says the incident stayed with her and contributed to the pressure she put on herself throughout the band’s rise to worldwide fame.

Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed, and Mel C remained part of the lineup. The Spice Girls would go on to become one of the biggest girl groups in history, selling more than 100 million records and turning “Girl Power” into a global phenomenon.

It’s pretty wild to think that two words, said in the heat of the moment, could have changed pop music history forever.
