It’s official, Ballarat motorists will never be able to drive the full length of Ring Road again.
Councillors made the call on Wednesday night given the rail crossing at Mitchell Park will soon have long freight trains regularly cross it when the Intermodal Freight Hub opens.
Council says the decision follows extensive engagement with local businesses since 2022.
“The decision ensures the smooth development of the Intermodal Freight Hub at Ballarat West Employment Zone, preventing long freight trains from blocking traffic and reducing future congestion,” a City of Ballarat spokesperson said.
You can still move through the area by taking the Link Road rail overpass.
Council will now begin the statutory process under the Local Government Act 1989, with physical works including turnaround bays and safety barriers budgeted for 2026/27.
