Question time in federal parliament

QUESTION TIME IN FEDERAL PARLIAMENT

WHAT WE LEARNED

* The government needs question time more than the opposition, after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull knocked back Labor's request to forego the daily parliamentary ritual so MPs could finish debating the same-sex marriage bill.

* Australia has reported 13 consecutive positive monthly trade balances - the first time that's happened in 44 years - Treasurer Scott Morrison proudly proclaimed.

* The government is leaving nothing to chance with the Bennelong by-election, referencing Labor's bad boy Sam Dastyari and celebrity candidate Kristina Keneally in multiple answers.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT WANTED TO SPIN

We're seeing our policies pay dividends with nearly a thousand jobs a day over the past year.

WHAT LABOR WANTED TO TALK ABOUT

Given the prime minister has spent 2017 hostage to his backbench and to events, why should Australians believe 2018 will be any better?

THEY SAID WHAT

"We can't allow the NSW disease to come to Canberra." - Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne says about a possible Labor win in the Bennelong by-election.

"You can keep him. He's all your's." - Senator Murray Watt says of the government's decision to appoint former Labor MP Gary Johns as head of the charities watchdog.
