A 22-year-old driver has died in the Royal Melbourne Hospital after his Commodore smashed into a tree on Remembrance Drive at Cardigan on the outskirts of Ballarat.
Emergency services were called to the straight stretch of road just before 9am Monday morning.
The tree was split in half whilst the driver was flung from the vehicle.
Cardigan residents remain concerned that another accident is waiting to happen at the Madden Road intersection.
They've called on authorities to discuss a fix to the crossroads urgently.
