Police are currently on the scene of a multi-vehicle accident in Wendouree.

A blue Holden Commodore ute was seen speeding along Forest St and Howitt St shortly before 10am today.

It was shortly followed by an unmarked police car, heading west along Howitt Street against the traffic.

Witnesses say other cars were flashing their light at the male driver of the blue ute, and appeared to be in a hurry to get somewhere, with one witness Zeke estimating the ute was travelling at around 80km/h.

The ute then crashed into three vehicles, including a small passenger van that was carrying adults with special needs, before coming to a stop and crashing into a lamp post outside of Ballarat Grammar.

Another witness, Jane, said she saw the man get out of the ute after it crashed into the post and take off on foot towards St Matthews Anglican Church, but was reportedly quickly apprended by police in plain clothes.

Paramedics were called to the scene around 10:05am to assess some patients, with no serious injuries reported.

Two people have since been taken to St John of God Hospital in a stable condition.

Police are expected to release more details shortly.

More to come.
