A man has been airlifted to Melbourne after a fatal crash on the Western Freeway this morning.
Emergency crews were called to the section of the freeway near the Gillies Road overpass around 6:10am after a car crashed into one of the bridge's pillars, killing the driver who is yet to be identified.
A two car collision happened just moments after as the drivers tried to avoid the accident.
One man, who was behind the wheel of a car involved in the second collision has been flown to the Royal Melbourne with life-threatening injuries.
The Western Freeway remains closed in both directions near Mount Rowan as emergency crews remain on scene to determine the cause of the crash.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and allow for extra time in their travel.
Melbourne-bound traffic is being diverted onto the Learmonth exit and return to the freeway via the Midland Highway.
While outbound traffic is being diverted onto Midland Highway/Creswick Road and returning to the freeway via Howitt Street and Learmonth Road.
The death takes Victoria's road toll to 172 lives lost this year, compared to 111 in 2018.
