Buninyong CFA volunteers have rescued a koala caught in a fire.

Fire crews were recently called to extinguish an out of control burn off when they discovered the marsupial caught in the middle of the blaze.

The volunteers were talked through the rescue by Wala Animal Sanctuary over the phone, before the koala was driven back to the Buninyong fire station and handed over to carers, who administered first aid.

The sanctuary who have called the koala Bernie are hopeful of getting him back to his home once he makes a full recovery.
