Murderer gets an extra 8 years jail

A man who stabbed to death a Springbank WW2 veteran in September 2015 has been given a new maximum sentence of 24 years in prison.

If he serves the full term, Jonathon Jeffrey Cooper will be 54 years old by the time he is released.

Ken Handford's body was found hog-tied on his 90th birthday in his isolated farmhouse East of Ballarat. Cash and war medals had been stolen.

The hearing at the Court of Appeal in Melbourne comes after a 31,500 signature petition started last year by grandaughter Leah to the Victorian Director of Public Prosecutions and the Attorney General.

The DPP argued yesterday that the sentence was 'manifestly inadequate'.

Cooper - who had an ice addiction - originally received a maximum 16-year sentence in 2017, with a non-parole period of 13 years. He had pleaded guilty to murder, aggravated burglary and theft.

At the time the family described at the sentence as "a kick in the guts".

The issue was also raised in State Parliament last year, with members of the Handford family present.

The petition was printed off and delivered in late 2017, but is still gathering signatures in February 2018.
