Western Australia's border closures have impacted visiting riders from the West at this year's Australian Road Cycling National Championships in Ballarat which begin today.

First up its the Time Trials at Federation University's Mt Helen campus, Thursday will see the Clubs Team Time Trials, the Criterium will be held in Ballarat's CBD on Friday night with the Road Races on the famous Mt Buninyong course across the weekend.

Speaking to Radio Ballarat SBS cycling commentator Matt Keenan says some WA based riders didn't want to risk being locked out of their home state.

"It's had people a little bit apprehensive about travel, it certainly did last year as well with the fear of being stuck."

"It's really now only impacting those in WA, so yes it has had an impact unfortunately, let's hope this is the last year we are having this conversation," Mr Keenan said.
