A four-part TV series partly filmed at Sovereign Hill will premier on SBS tonight.

The production titled 'New Gold Mountain' tells the story of Chinese Miners who risk everything to find their fortune.

Actor Christopher James Baker, who spent two weeks in Ballarat filming, says the series opens a box in history that hasn’t been explored.

"When I first read the script I just thought this was such a fascinating and different take on history that was there and happened."

"It's all based on truth but just didn't get taught," Mr Baker said.

Filmed in Sovereign Hill and around Melbourne and regional Victoria, the series opens in Ballarat in 1857, where European, Chinese and Indigenous Australian characters live together in a wild-west frontier town as they seek to strike it rich by finding gold.

New Gold Mountain premieres tonight at 9.30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand.
