From fog yesterday to extreme wind gusts today... Ballarat braces

After being blanketed in fog for much of the day yesterday Ballarat is again bracing for some severe weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a vigorous cold front will cross the state bringing strong northerly winds from tonight.
Gusts of up to 90Km/h are expected.

"Damaging northerly winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible over southwest Victoria, the central ranges, and the northeast ranges from early Monday afternoon," according to a bureau statement.

"Damaging winds will become more likely during the evening ahead of the front, and will extend to parts of Central Victoria."

"Winds are expected to ease in the west later on Monday evening, about central areas early on Tuesday morning and then over the north-eastern ranges by 10am Tuesday, as the cold front crosses the state."

Locations which may be affected include Hamilton, Warrnambool, Portland, Kyneton, Ballarat and Wonthaggi.

Prior to the front Ballarat will reach a top of 15C today before the chill really arrives with a top of 10C Tuesday and 9c on Wednesday.
It'll be wet too with 10mm forecast to hit local gauges each day from tomorrow until Thursday.
