Disturbing photo's have emerged of what appears to be one of Ballarat's heritage railway gates in a pile of rubbish almost completely destroyed.

The gates were smashed into by a V/Line train almost 11 months ago with the Lydiard Street crossing blocked ever since.

Heritage campaigner and Ballarat Councillor Samantha McIntosh say the photo's plant the seed of fear that the history of the gates is not understood by rail authorities.

One photograph taken 2 weeks ago (image below) shows the gate left out in the open but partially intact, a second shot taken this week (image above) appears to show it having been pushed into a pile of rubbish by diggers that are working on site.

The pile sits just meters from the new multi storey carpark in the railway precinct.
