A $25 million investment in Ballarat's sewer network begins today with some disruption expected in the CBD.

Stage 1 (CBD to White Flat) will kick off this morning in Peel Street between Mair and Little Bridge Streets.

Central Highlands Water Managing Director Paul O'Donoghue says new technology should minimise delays.

"We've done a lot of pre-work with traders and the general public around making sure they know there is going to be some disruption."

"We are trying to minimise that and listen to people and act if issues present themselves."

"We're also using new technology like micro-tunnelling under the main streets," Mr O'Donoghue said.

The Ballarat based water authority says the project is 'future proofing' on an extremely large scale.
