Of the 40,000 Covid related fines issued by Victoria Police new figures have revealed about 350 of them are in the Ballarat Police service area. A further 356 fines were issued in the Moorabool Police Service Area, which includes Moorabool, Hepburn and Golden Plains shires.

It comes after police admit they badly worded a statement that said people with unpaid fines would now be let off with a caution.

The Deputy Commissioner for Regional Operations Rick Nugent says they will pursue outstanding fines for breaches of the Chief Health Officers directions.

"A guide was prepared for prosecutors and police with respect to prosecuting fines. In hindsight, that document was poorly worded and doesn't appropriately articulate the process for fines and warnings in relation to the Chief Health Officer directions," he said.

About 5700 people are on a fine payment plan with 3000 already paying.
