Another option for Ballarat locals to get to Tullamarine Airport is about become a reality, but you'll have to be patient.

$10 billion has been allocated for the Melbourne Airport Rail Line project with construction due to start in 2022 and be finished by 2029.

The Committee for Ballarat says the project has short changed Regional Victorians preferring dedicated tracks and a tunnel, although Ballarat Mayor Daniel Moloney has backed the plan.

“The airport link is a nationally significant project and Victorians have been waiting a long time for it to become a reality. With construction to start in 2022, the agreement will support up to 8,000 jobs during construction,” the Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.

“When complete, the link will slash travel times, bust congestion and be a major boost to the economy.”

Passengers from Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo will travel to the airport via a single interchange at Sunshine, while passengers from Gippsland will be connected via a single interchange at a choice of locations along the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

According to the Federal Government it delivers the best possible integration with the existing network and paves the way for future improvements to regional and western metropolitan lines.

Melbourne Airport Rail will use the new fleet of High Capacity Metro Trains.
