A new report shows a massive project that would see transmission lines extend across Western Victoria, including Ballarat, could go underground.
Moorabool Shire CEO Derek Madden says there's no reason the lines can't be buried following the findings of independent consultants.
The report, based on literature reviews and data modelling, assesses the impacts of overhead line and underground cables.
The report found that the undergrounding of powerlines is indeed a viable alternative for the proposed Western Victoria Transmission Network Project.
“There is no reason these lines can’t be placed underground. With this independent report to back us, we’ll continue to push for this to occur,” Mr Madden said.
Local farmers have raised fears of the project making prime farm land unusable if the powerlines are placed overhead.
