What the Llanberris athletics site in Golden Point looks like in the future remains up in the air.

The ageing athletics facility is being replaced by a new track and clubrooms at the old show grounds on Creswick Road, due to a legacy infrastructure package that was offered in the aftermath of the cancelled Commonwealth Games.

City of Ballarat CEO Evan King says what he does know is that it won’t continue to be an athletics precinct.

“We certainly don’t need two at the moment.”

“The whole point of the new athletics track is that it will be visible, it will be accessible, it will be linked into a sporting precinct, and it will be of international standard which will be incredible for our up-and-coming athletes,” Mr. King said.

In related news, after an 18-month parliamentary enquiry the third and final report into the failed regional Victorian Commonwealth Games has been handed down.

The legislative committee saying the games let Victorians down whilst making 62 findings and six recommendations.

The Committee concluded that the Victorian Government’s decision to withdraw from hosting the event was a direct result of a series of failures during the bid and project approval stages.
