Support appears to be growing to honour Ballarat’s Michelle Payne with a statue, almost ten years since her historic Melbourne Cup win.
Ms. Payne was the first and only female jockey to win the event, riding Prince of Penzance in the 2015 race.
Of the hundreds of public art pieces around the state honouring exceptional individuals, only around 7 per cent are of real women.
The co-founder of Put Her Name On It, Kerry Wilson, says paying tribute to Michelle makes sense from a local and national perspective.
“Any public art, any place name after a woman who’s contributed and done something remarkable can contribute to a local story [and] can contribute to the national story, which is what Michelle has done,” she said.
