Work continues today to completely extinguish the bush fire that broke out on Tuesday in Newtown and burnt areas of the Ross Creek State Forest.
The fire is now under control, however Strickland Road, Staffordshire Reef Road and State Forest Road remain closed.
Fire conditions that day were described by authorities as the worst the state has seen since 2019/2020.
Stephen Walls from the Incident Control Centre in Sebastopol says smoke will remain visible, but locals shouldn’t be concerned.
“As the weather warms up in the late afternoon, we’d expect to see fire activity slightly increase.”
“We’ve also got a plan to burn out unburnt areas, so the community shouldn’t be concerned by aircraft activity or increased levels of smoke because they are part of our firefighting activities,” Mr. Walls said.
Forest Fire Management Victoria say emergency services, including heavy vehicles, will remain in the area.
