Concern has been raised over a proposed new tailings dam at the Ballarat Gold Mine in Mt Clear.
So much so, that a new community safety action group has been formed to demand an Environmental Effects Statement on the 39 hectare project.
Secretary of the group Dr Dora Pearce says the current proposal would see the tailings storage facility built just 150 meters away from houses.
“The problem with the proposed tailings dam number 4, is that it would be too close to housing, and there’s very little tree buffering,” Dr Pearce said.
Subject to planning approval the Ballarat Gold Mine hope to begin construction of the dam at some stage this year.
