A Ballarat councillor has hit out at this week’s decision by Powercor to locate a new substation near homes in York Street in Ballarat East.
The utility will spend $30m on the facility and has offered nearby residents access to a $2 million community support fund.
Cr. Ben Taylor says that despite Powercor having owned the site for decades, community expectations have changed.
“They purchased the land about 50 years ago and a lot of things have changed since then, especially around people’s amenities.”
“Right there in York Street is that great connection between Sovereign Hill and the Wildlife Park that people go down whether they walk or drive a car.”
“Is this substation something we want to see in the middle of the city?” Cr. Taylor said.
Powercor are planning two community information sessions, the first on Saturday 2nd December from 10am and the second on Wednesday 6th December from 4pm.
Both will be held at Sovereign Park Motor Inn on Main Road, with no need to register.
