Disadvantaged young learner drivers in Ballarat are currently finding it even harder to get their license with a shortage of mentor instructors.
The L2P program which runs through the Ballarat Foundation is desperately calling for more volunteers to put their hand up and fill the void, according to current volunteer Sam Milne.
“So, Ballarat availability is for 113 young people between 16 and 21 at any time.”
“At the moment we can only fill 85 of those positions because we just don’t have the mentors available,” Ms. Milne said.
The TAC L2P Program is operated locally by the Ballarat Foundation with funding provided by the TAC through Department of Transport.
The program assists disadvantaged Victorian learner drivers with no access to a supervising driver or vehicle to gain the 120 hours driving experience required to apply for a probationary licence.
L2P focuses on helping young people become safe, confident drivers in an effort to reduce Victoria’s road toll.
It also provides an opportunity for young people to interact with positive adult role models, gain confidence and move towards social independence.
