Ballarat City Council is attempting to get ahead of the curve when it comes to the future of kerbside collection.
Next month, Council will ask residents for feedback on a range of household waste sorting options, developed on the back of last year’s Waste Collection survey – which received more than 2000 responses.
With the disposal of waste in the City of Ballarat costing ratepayers $28,000 per day, Mayor Des Hudson says it’s time our city begins to think differently about waste.
“The environmental and financial costs will continue to grow unless we change how we recycle and reduce waste,” he said.
The move to shake things up locally comes ahead of the state government’s transition in the near future to a four bin household waste system which will include a new glass service and a new food organics and garden organics (FOGO) service.
Mayor Hudson says it makes now the right time for local changes.
“The State Government changes to how we sort our waste are an exciting opportunity for our municipality to design our future kerbside collections to ensure more household waste and recycling is being recovered and transformed into something new” he said.
The Ballarat community will be invited to have their say on the new options as part of a four-week consultation period through March.
