What’s being dubbed the ‘greatest school excursion of all time’ is on in Ballarat today.
Around 400 year 9 students from Phoenix College and Ballarat Clarendon College will gather at The Goods Shed for an event designed to replicate a high energy music festival.
Run by The Reach Foundation, ‘Heroes Day Out’ aims to equip young people with the essential tools to navigate life.
The Ballarat students will be hearing from everyday young Australians to help explore the idea of who they are and what they want to be.
Reach’s Jana Christodoulou says the “Heroes Day” session builds on the “Hero’s Journey” concept taught in the English curriculum whereby novels are studied through a hero who goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed.
“But it’s very different to how we look at it. We’re using it into real life and how we connect to it as people everyday.
“Some of the students may be familiar with it and some not, but it’s a new theory they can learn and adapt to their life.” Christodoulou said.
The day’s schedule and the ethos of the Reach Foundation are the legacy of late AFL great Jim Stynes, who established the foundation in 1994 to inspire every young person to believe in themselves and get the most out of life.
