A race on the card at today’s thoroughbred meet in Ballarat has been re-named in honour of the 34-year-old jockey killed in a race fall at Donald on Monday.

The second race was named the ‘In honour of Dean Holland’ with jockeys wearing black armbands throughout the meet.

“Condolences are extended to Dean’s wife Lucy, their gorgeous young children & extended family,” said the Ballarat Turf Club via social media.

“Our thoughts are extended to the participants, officials, medics, club staff & volunteers on course at Donald and to the numerous stables at Ballarat at which Dean was both a trusted and reliable trackwork rider & jockey – we’ll miss his great smile!”

“One of the best, taken too soon,” they said.

Radio Ballarat understands the group of leading local trainers, including Michelle Payne, met at a pub in Ballarat yesterday to pay their respects.
