Shopping with reusable bags is great for the environment, but your reusable bags could be making you ill if you don’t wash them! A US study recently found many reusable bags harbour a lot of bacteria like coliform bacteria and E. coli. The biggest problem is meat. Mixing meat products in bags with other fresh produce is something to avoid. If you keep your meat in a separate bag, it reduces the chance of getting sick.
It is however a good idea to wash your reusable bags.
Wash canvas bags in hot water with detergent and run through the dryer. Wash recycled plastic bags and nylon bags by hand in warm soapy water and dry on the line. Insulated shopping bags should be cleaned with a disinfecting wipe after each use (if using for meat).
