Police will appeal the sentence handed to Jonothan Cooper, the man convicted with the murder of a Springbank man, found dead on his 90th birthday.
Cooper pleaded guilty to murder, aggravated burglary and theft and on April 21 was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 13.
The close of court today [Friday 19 May] was the deadline for the Director of Public Prosecutions to lodge an appeal.
It comes after grandaughter Leah Handford launched a change.org petition less than 2 weeks ago, calling for the appeal as well as new sentencing laws to better reflect community standards.
As of 4pm today it had 30,780 names.
